Or you can really cheaply and easily build a propane forge, but you don't get the carbonizing of the steel that a coal forge provides.Īnd if you do go the fire and tongs route, you then have to learn how to temper the finished product or it won't be much use, or very safe. Not as difficult as one might think, but one does need a good big anvil, very expensive new and hard to find old the forge is pretty easy to make, just a bowl you blow air thru from the bottom, then you need to source coal. I got about halfway down the DIY blacksmithing route. apparently he just doesn't have the arm for it. My local blacksmith almost laughed in my face when I offered him the work. His industrial grinder took them down nicely.īetter would be to go the blacksmith route, with fire and forge. I bought a couple of springs, chopped them up, and had hung onto them for years until a guy joined the club that happened to be a former machinist, with a well-equipped shop of his own.

Maybe that's what you meant? Sorry if I'm preaching to choir:)ĪLSO- be sure your diamond blade is rated for higher speed than your grinder runs. I'd stick with a composite disc to dress your chisels. I might be incorrect, and don't know what you are using, but wanted to point that out. The metal cutting I have seen always uses a composite blade(compacted abrasive). My understanding of diamond blade cutting discs is that unless specifically designed for concrete with rebar/ or industrial demo(I-beams etc), you are probably going to trash the blade grinding metal with it.Īlso, the concrete/rebar jobs are always water cooled.
